Where are cars built, and with what kind of power? We lay the plants of the world’s 20 largest automakers by sales over a world map, so you can see at a glance each maker, its EV, hybrid and gasoline output, and where electrification and production stand today.
◇ Headquarters ●Sites (vehicle, engine/transmission, parts, battery). Sources: official sites and annual reports (20-F, 10-K, etc.), plus secondary sources such as Wikipedia and news reports. Positions are approximate city centers; operating status and EV/HV/gasoline classification may change. Ranking is by 2023–24 sales.
Three differences the map reveals
- At Toyota, Honda and Suzuki, over 60% of vehicle plants handle hybrids but only 10–20% handle EVs. Japan’s electrification is hybrid-led.
- At BYD, Geely and SAIC, 60–100% of vehicle plants build EVs. Their way into electrification is different.
- 15 or more of the 20 makers operate in China, the US and India. The biggest markets are contested by local production.
A plant map is also a map of who each maker intends to sell to, and with what powertrain. Click a country to see which makers compete there.
Note: Shares are per plant in the listed data, and include secondary sources. For the latest operating status, check each maker’s official site.
